The US Central Intelligence Agency is designing a newgeostationary spy satellite. Geostationary satellites remain in afixed position relative to some point on Earth because they areplaced in orbit 3.6 *107 meters above the Earth’s surface. Thissatellite is to be equipped with a high resolution,widefield-of-view digital camera that will create JPEG images to betransmitted over a 10 Mbps full-duplex microwave link back to acomputer at its base station on Earth. The propagation speed ofthis link is 2.4 *108 meters/second. The satellite transmits eachimage as a stream of 37 *106 bits along with a very small headerthat contains a checksum computed over the image contents. When theimage has been received at the base station, the computer thencomputes a checksum over the received image and compares it withthe checksum calculated at the satellite. A small acknowledgementmessage is sent back to the satellite over the microwave linkindicating whether or not the image was received correctly. If theimage was not received correctly the entire image is retransmittedfrom the satellite. If the image was received correctly, the cameracan then immediately begin to acquire a new image and transmit thenext stream of bits to the ground station. In answering thefollowing questions, show how you derived your results includingall intermediate values you used in the calculations. Assume notransmission errors occur and that transmission and processingtimes for the checksums and acknowledgements are negligible. In answering the following questions, show how you derived yourresults including all intermediate values you used in thecalculations. Assume no transmission errors occur and thattransmission and processing times for the checksums andacknowledgements are negligible. a) How many images can the satellite transmit per minute?b ) For tracking small-scale movements on the ground it isdesirable to have the satellite successfully transmit at least onenew image each second. What is the largest image size allowed (howmany bits can each image contain) in order to meet thisrequirement? c) Consider increasing the transmission speed of the microwavelink to 100 Mbps while the propagation speed remains at 2.4 *108meters/second. What is the largest image size that can still meetthe requirement of transmitting one new image each second? . . .
